TEXT: Hebrews 4:12-16 – For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit … and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Who do you trust most in the world? How can you tell?

For some of us, this is someone we trust enough to fall asleep in front of—someone we know is safe, someone we can relax with. For others, it’s someone we trust to know our passwords—or our bank balance. It might be someone we are willing to tell our weight, or our clothing size. Or it might be someone we allow to see us when we’re naked and ill—vomiting, wounded, and bleeding, out of our minds with fever or dementia.

These are times we feel vulnerable, like someone could hurt us very deeply if we let them get that close to us. And so as much as we can, we stay out of situations where we have to be that open, that trusting.

But we can’t do that when it comes to God. I mean, what are we supposed to do with a verse like this? “No creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” That’s just plain terrifying. We know our sins and weaknesses—and God does too, God help us.

Is there any help for us? Yes, there is. Because the God who terrifies us has become our Savior—Jesus Christ, the One who love us so deeply He lay down His own life to forgive and heal and cleanse us. He took our shame and guilt upon Himself, carrying it to the cross, taking it away from us forever. He destroyed it through His death. And He rose from the dead to be our Savior forever, our deepest and closest friend—no longer the One who terrifies us, but the One we run to whenever we are afraid.

What kind of a person is He? The Gospels will tell you. He is gentle with those who are ashamed or afraid (see John 8:3-11; Luke 8:43-48). His heart goes out to people who are grieving (see Luke 7:1-17, 36-50). He loves little children and those who are outcasts (see Mark 10:13-16; Luke 17:12-19).

He shows respect to those everyone else looks down on (see John 4:1-42). He struggles to rescue His enemies (see John 13:1-38) and forgives them the worst of evils, and never holds it against them in the future (see Acts 9:1-19; Galatians 2:20). He has no ego, and no concern about His own comfort (see John 13:1-5; John 10:7-18). And when someone trusts Him and turns to Him, He celebrates (see Luke 15:1-32).

This is not a God to be frightened of. This is a God to trust with your whole heart, because He loves you.
